Brighton - Holiday at Home

I love Brighton, it is so continental. Pavement cafe's and gallery's adorn every street. It is the outdoor life.

Brighton - Holiday at Home

I sat yesterday looking at cheap holidays and breaks online. It is one of my favourite pastimes, looking on the internet for quick sun getaways.

But why do we always look abroad?

The obvious answer is weather.

However for any of you who have been hibernating recently (due to the weather) and have missed how awful it has been, it has been a theme across the continent.

So as we are English (and not French) we only get a measily two days for a weekend and you will have to go a long way to find the sun.

So what have we got here on the British Riviera? Of late I have had more reason to spend time in Brighton although I have always frequented it for work and the odd night out.

Brighton is much more than student bars and a dodgy ride on the pier, although they are two of my favourite activities.

It has soul and unlike its city sister London it is a bit more lezzy for those women who are looking for a bit of sapphic fun.

There are more lesbian bars, more lesbian nights and more lesbians in general on the coast.

Places you must check out:

To eat:

Browns - I know it is part of a chain but there is something about the Brighton arm that feels a little bit like the tea room at The Ritz.
Last time I went in there it was full of gay couples having a romantic sojourn.
Go in for Champagne and Sea Food, it is lovely.

To Drink:

Charles Street - This is a bar that does drag, and does drag well. With a pretty equal mix of dykes and dudes it is on the seafront, with, and don't get too excited - a decent outside area in which to have a fag.

Shop:

Well, where do we begin? In Brighton there is every brand that you could ever need, my personal favs are Aveda, Mac and Heals.

See:

The Pier, I know, I know, we all have bad pier memories. Eating chips, being attacked by seagulls or being forced to shove your face through one of those bloody awful MDF cut outs of a fat bloke and his wife in a bathing suit.

However, it is a must. It is no different to any other pier, I still manage to lose £10 on the 2p machine everytime I go in but it has candy floss and those doughnuts that they fry for you and you have to eat them in under 10 seconds otherwise they will turn the bag see through and fall on the floor.

This will guarantee you a shag.

Shag:

The Amsterdam - A regular haunt for the gay boys. Every gay man I know has a story about the Amsterdam, apparently there is a sauna downstairs (I still don't understand) but never the less it is apparently a good ol' place to take your SO or potential SO.
Right on the seafront it is a spit from Charles Street and those doughnuts on the pier.

For the ladies that like a little less sauna and a little more luxury the place to be is Avalon Hotel.
Brian and Tom the owners are two of the friendliest and hospitable guys you are ever likely to meet.
In the heart of Kemp Town they have created a wonderful hotel
with beautiful rooms that includes a wicked four-poster, the fabulous Imperial Room and an away-from-it-all double that has a cheeky view of the sea over the rooftops.
